I'm pretty sure it is nation wide because our rep mentioned that the head accounting office in Wisconsin was looking into allowing payments to made over a three month period. The slight catch is you need to buy an equal number of Shout and Sentry.

Ok, need help on this one. I just pulled a black and white, "reality-red" calf, from a red factored shottle. She is black and white but RC from here red Dam. Wheres my Red calf?????? Thought that was a sure thing?

You had a 50/50 shot based on whether the cow passed her black gene or red gene.

I agree. Also I'll note that red is recessive and black will always dominate.

What will really screw with you is the B/R factor. Red newborn calves that turn black. It's a gene that is recessive to black but will throw red calves that turn black when pared with red. I have had 2 calves do this and you can kinda tell that the calves will turn black by the colors around their eyes, nose and maybe feet.

Here is a chart that can explain things better.

Good link! So in theory...if I breed her again to reality-red, I will get a red calf, cause I just blew 50% for black and white. oh well, should be a perfect mate on her, not sure if ABS will still be interested in a RC Reality-red, big deal.............

I just had an odd one, a Black/Red heifer bred to Million (Black) yielded a red calf.

The Jersey lurking a generation back likely did something there. You never know what you get when crossbreeding.

How does that work? Million isn't a red carrier so he only gives a black gene. Black is dominant so there should be no possible way to get a red calf.

I'm thinking it had something to do with the Jersey in the pedigree, along with Swedish Red. I'm not dealing with Holsteins here so every once in a while an odd coat color pops up that shouldn't.

Could be a different variation of the Black/Red that formed when combining Jersey and Swedish Red in the dam that expressed itself over Millions black gene. Most of the time when I breed Jersey to Holstein it will come out black but I do get the odd one that is reddish tinted. Through in a generation of Swedish Red (which can have another different variation of Black/Red) and you can get some odd things.

I believe that Eljefe is dipping into the crossbred colors and not the Red/Black factor seen in pure Holsteins. In my experience with Holsteins crossed to Jerseys crossed to Swedish Red, I've seen red turning to black often.
